OSHA Releases Final Silica Rule

Posted: Apr 07, 2016

OSHA released the final silica rule – see: https://www.osha.gov/silica/index.html.

Key points:

• The new standard for silica exposure is 50 ug/m3 PEL.
• Companies have two years to comply with the new rule, with the exception of fracking operations who have five years.
• Construction companies have two options: 1) Follow the prescribed practices for certain tasks without monitoring, and 2) Comply with same monitoring as general industry and maritime.

The final rule and various resources can be found on OSHA’s website at https://www.osha.gov/pls/publications/publication.athruz?pType=Industry&pID=192.

ASSE is developing a comprehensive summary of the new rule, which ASSE will share as soon as possible.

ASSE has been involved in the development of this rulemaking with our comment on the proposed (http://www.assp.org/asse-comments-on-oshas-silica-proposed-rule/), participation in the public hearing (http://www.assp.org/asse-testifies-at-osha-silica-public-meeting/) and a supplemental comment addressing the issue of competent person.
